IMPROVED POWERBALL® GAME CELEBRATES TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY: CREATES MORE THAN 500 MILLIONAIRES EACH YEAR
The PowerBall® drawing on January 18, 2014 marked the two-year anniversary of the current PowerBall® game design, and the improved features have paid off big for players across the nation. When the current game was introduced January 15, 2012, the Multi-State Lottery Association that governs PowerBall® predicted at least 300 millionaires created per year, and PowerBall® delivered. In the last 24 months, PowerBall® actually created 1,013 millionaires, an average of more than 500 millionaires per year or nine millionaires per week.
These big wins are happening in the smallest state too. Since January 15, 2012, the Rhode Island Lottery has paid out $38,516,555 in PowerBall® prizes; of these, five were $1 million prizes for players who matched 5 out of 5 numbers, without the PowerBall® number. Two of these Match 5 winners opted for Power Play® for an additional $1, which increased their $1 million prize to $2 million. In addition, Rhode Island Lottery sold two of the 34 multimillion-dollar jackpot winning tickets since the game changed: a winning $336,400,000 PowerBall® jackpot ticket from the February 11, 2012 drawing and a winning $60,000,000 PowerBall® jackpot ticket from the March 7, 2012 drawing.
The changes made in 2012 also included implementing a larger starting jackpot that grows more quickly. Consequently, PowerBall® has created the four largest jackpots in the game's 20-plus-year history in the past two years alone.
PowerBall® jackpots start at $40 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win by matching the five white ball numbers (1-59) and the red PowerBall® number (1-35). There are eight other ways to win non-jackpot prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million or up to $2 million if the ticket includes Power Play®. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are approximately 1 in 31.
PowerBall® is played in 45 U.S. lottery jurisdictions. PowerBall® drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. For more information about PowerBall®, please click here. PowerBall® and Power Play® are registered trademarks of the Multi-State Lottery Association.
