A Billion Dollar Jackpot
A Few Big Winners in Rhode Island
The nation will bear witness to the first ever Billion Dollar Lottery drawing. Incredibly, Saturday night's record breaking $900 million PowerBall® jackpot rolled to an estimated $1.3 Billion for the Wednesday, January 13th draw. The cash option is an estimated $806 million. Granted, there was no jackpot winner, a few lucky Rhode Islanders won big.
Edward Huff of East Providence claimed the winning $50,000 PowerBall® ticket from Saturday's draw. His Quick Pick ticket matched four numbers and the PowerBall® number to win $50,000. Though he was one number away from the record breaking jackpot, Mr. Huff is a very grateful man. "I would have been happy with a $4.00 win," he said. He purchased the ticket at Barrington Liquors, 618 Warren Ave., East Providence, while picking up a bottle of wine for his wife. The couple plan to retire in the next few years so this win will certainly help with the transition, he explained. Also, they love to travel and have a trip booked for next month, so they will likely use some of the money toward travel expenses as well.
A Bristol woman claimed a $40,000 "50x the Money" Instant Ticket prize. She said she was dumbfounded when she realized she won. She is a single mom, so a win of this amount will benefit her family significantly. Thus, she plans to spend the money won on her children. Pick 'N Pay Food Mart, 300 Hope St., Bristol, sold the winning ticket.
A woman from Providence won $12,604 on a Daily Numbers ticket from the January 7th evening draw. She wagered $1.00 on two 4-digit straight bets to win $5,000 on each and she placed a 4-digit combo bet for $0.50 to win an additional $2,604. She said she has never won big before, so she is quite overwhelmed. She does not have any immediate plans; however, she is considering going on a vacation. The winning ticket was purchased at 7-Eleven, 65 Manton Ave., Providence.
