Did you know?
Rhode Island was one of the founding members of the Multi-State Lottery Association which established the Lotto America game in 1987. This multi-state game became Powerball® in 1992.
Rhode Island is one of twenty-nine states, the District of Columbia, and US Virgin Islands to offer Powerball®. As part of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), these member states offer the game that consistently reaches jackpots worth multi-million dollars.
PowerBall® has become one of the most popular Lottery games due to its extremely high jackpot payouts. As of February 2006, the highest jackpot amount was $365 million, won on February 18, 2006.
With a starting jackpot of $15 million, if no winner is drawn, the jackpot continues to increase by no less than $5 million for each drawing until someone wins.
Drawings are aired locally on WPRI-TV 12 at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. Powerball® tickets may be purchased at Retailers until 9:50p.m. on drawing nights.
Object of game
Players wager $1 that the six numbers they select will match the five numbers selected at random from fifty-five available numbers and one from a possible forty-two Powerball® numbers. A multi-million dollar jackpot is awarded to those who match the six numbers.
Subsidiary prizes are awarded for various matches other than the jackpot combination.
Power Play option
For an extra $1 purchase per wager, players have a chance to multiply subsidiary prize winnings up to five times the original amount on all non-jackpot prizes.
Powerball® prizes from $3 to $200,000 can be multiplied 2, 3, 4 or 5 times their value, for up to $1,000,000 playing PowerPlay.
During the Wednesday and Saturday night Powerball® drawings, a wheel will spin selecting the Power Play (multiplier) number. Total winnings are determined by the multiplier picked. (Example: If subsidiary prize is $100 and the PowerPlay Multiplier is 4, the prize now becomes $400 if the PowerPlay option was purchased.)
How to fill out your play slip
Select five (5) numbers, ranging from 1 to 55 as shown in the upper play area of the play slip, and one (1) Powerball® number, ranging from 1 to 42, in the lower play area. Do not erase on play slip. Use separate boards for each set (5/55; 1/42) chosen. Each play costs $1.00 (without PowerPlay option). Each play slip has five (5) boards.
The same numbers for more than one drawing may be played by marking the appropriate "MULTIDRAW" box for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 26 consecutive drawings.
By marking the “QP” box, rather than selecting the six numbers, the computer will draw a “Quick Pick” series of numbers for your wager. Before submitting your play slip, make sure the numbers you have chosen are the ones you want.
Powerball® tickets cannot be cancelled after they are processed by the Retailer.
