Rhode Island was one of the founding members of the Multi-State Lottery Association which established the Lotto America game in 1987. This multi-state game became PowerBall® in 1992.
Rhode Island is one of thirty states, the District of Columbia, and US Virgin Islands to offer PowerBall®. As part of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), these member states offer the game that consistently reaches jackpots worth multi-million dollars.
PowerBall® has become one of the most popular Lottery games due to its extremely high jackpot payouts. As of January 2008, the highest jackpot amount was $365 million, won on February 18, 2006.
With a starting jackpot of $20 million, if no winner is drawn, the jackpot continues to increase by no less than $5 million for each drawing until someone wins.
Drawings are aired locally on WPRI-TV 12 at 10:59pm Wednesdays and Saturdays. PowerBall® tickets may be purchased at Retailers until 9:50pm on drawing nights.
Players wager $1 that the six numbers they select will match the five numbers selected at random from fifty-nine (59) available numbers and one from a possible thirty-nine (39) PowerBall® numbers. Players must match all six numbers to win jackpot.
Subsidiary prizes are awarded for various matches other than the jackpot combination.
For an extra $1 purchase per wager, players have a chance to multiply subsidiary prize winnings up to five times the original amount on all non-jackpot prizes.
Win a Cool $1 Million if you purchase PowerPlay® and match 5 white balls, no matter what the PowerPlay® number drawn is. Beginning January 7, 2009 all $200,000 prizes for matching 5/5 white balls are automatically multiplied by a PowerPlay® number of 5 no matter what the PowerPlay® number is drawn. You could win $1,000,000!
Prizes matching less than the first (5) numbers with PowerPlay® will be mulitplied by the PowerPlay® number drawn. PowerBall® prizes from $3 to $10,000 can be multiplied 2, 3, 4 or 5 times their value, for up to $50,000 playing PowerPlay®.
During the Wednesday and Saturday night PowerBall® drawings, a wheel will spin selecting the PowerPlay® (multiplier) number. Total winnings are determined by the multiplier picked. (Example: If subsidiary prize is $100 and the PowerPlay® Multiplier is 4, the prize now becomes $400 if the PowerPlay® option was purchased.)
Pick Your Numbers: Each play slip has five boards (Play A-E). Each board is a separate play. You may play up to five sets of numbers on one play slip. Choose (5) numbers, ranging from 1 to 59 from the upper area of the play slip for each board played. Each board played costs $1 (without the PowerPlay® option). Do not erase on play slip.
PowerBall® Number: Select (1) PowerBall® number ranging from 1 to 39 in the lower play area for each board played.
Quick Pick: By marking the two “QP” boxes, rather than selecting the six numbers, the computer will draw a “Quick Pick” series of numbers for your wager. You can select "QP" for first 5 numbers and choose your own PowerBall number or select "QP" for the PowerBall number and choose the first 5 numbers yourself.
PowerPlay®: Check the “YES” box in the yellow PowerPlay® box of the play slip to add the PowerPlay® option. If you select PowerPlay®, all boards played will include PowerPlay®. The PowerPlay® option doubles the ticket price.
Multi Draw: The same numbers for more than one drawing may be played by marking the appropriate "MULTIDRAW" box for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 26 consecutive drawings.
Verify: Before submitting your play slip, make sure the numbers you have chosen are the ones you want.
PowerBall® tickets cannot be cancelled after they are processed by the Retailer.
Be sure to sign your ticket upon purchase. Prizes of $599 or less can be claimed at any Rhode Island Lottery retailer. Prizes over $599 must be claimed at Lottery Headquarters, 1425 Pontiac Ave., Cranston, Rhode Island 02920. All prizes must be claimed within one year of the drawing date. Jackpot winners can decide on cash or annuity payment within 60 days after becoming entitled to the prize. Annuity payments are made over 30 years.
